No bail for Stines; case to be moved out of Letcher County
WHITESBURG, Ky. — The murder case against former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines will be moved out of Letcher County after a judge ruled that extensive publicity and deeply divided public opinion make it impossible to seat a fair jury locally. The ruling came in an order entered Tuesday by Special Judge Christopher T. Cohron following a June 5 hearing on several pending motions in Stines’ case. Stines is charged in the Sept. 19, 2024, shooting death of Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins, who was killed inside his chambers at the Letcher County Courthouse. Former Magoffin teacher sentenced on child exploitation charge
ASHLAND, Ky. — A former Magoffin County teacher has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for enticing a student to engage in sexual activity. Jason Back, 44, of Salyersville, pleaded guilty to a federal charge of online enticement back in January. In doing so, he admitted to texting a 17-year-old girl in March of 2023, sending her sexually explicit messages and making plans for him to pick her up to have sex in his car. Golden Eagles Open Season With 4-3 Win Over Jackson City
Soccer season kicked off around the state Monday, and the Johnson Central Golden Eagles started the season strong with a 4-3 win over Jackson City High School. Ty Wilson led the effort for the Golden Eagles, scoring all four goals. Jackson Evans added two assists, while Gavin Webb chipped in one.
