Martin County man seeks to change plea in federal drug case

ASHLAND, Ky. — A Martin County man now appears ready to enter a guilty plea in his federal drug case. Cody Gene Spears, 30, of Lovely, was arrested back in September after being indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of distributing more than 50 grams of meth. The indictment accuses Spears of selling the drug on two occasions in September. He was originally scheduled to got to trial in November, but his attorney asked for a continuance in order to negotiate a resolution to the case. Prosecutors drop fetal homicide charge against woman who took abortion drugs at home

Melinda S. SpencerCAMPTON, Ky. — A Wolfe County woman who gave herself an abortion at home is now looking at no more than five years in prison, after prosecutors asked to dismiss a charge of fetal homicide that could have resulted in a life sentence. Melinda Spencer, 35, of Campton, was arrested after she told United Clinic that she’d had an abortion at home and buried the remains in her back yard.
