Valley Elementary Goes Undefeated to Win Viking Classic Championship Against Multi-State Field

NEWLAND, N.C. — Valley Elementary’s fifth-grade basketball team captured the championship at the fourth annual Viking Classic — Battle at the Border this weekend, finishing a perfect 4-0 against a competitive, multi-state field. Coached by Jordan Johnson, Valley topped an eight-team bracket featuring programs from North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky. Supreme Court allows Stines judge to remain on case

Special Judge Christopher Cohron and former Letcher Sheriff Shawn Mickey StinesFRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Supreme Court has denied a request to remove the judge presiding over the Shawn Stines murder case. Stines is charged in the Sept. 19, 2024, shooting death of Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins. In its ruling, the court found no evidence that Special Judge Christopher Cohron’s impartiality could reasonably be questioned, despite arguments from the defense about Cohron’s prior proximity to Mullins at a judicial meeting just days before the shooting.
