Pike Central improves to 3-0 with another impressive outing

by JACOB CHANEY

Senior pitcher Kaden Crum went the distance throwing all four innings in a mercy rule 16-1 victory over the East Ridge Warriors, falling to 0-2 on the season.

Crum looked comfortable on the mound, allowing only one run on three hits, with four strikeouts and two walks. He also went 2-3 at the plate and drove in a run. Crum has had a strong start to his senior year, hitting a homerun in his first at-bat of the season.

The Warriors lone run came in the first inning with a Sacrifice fly from third baseman Connor Adkins, with Center fielder Carter Damron scoring on the play.

Pike County Central’s bats stayed hot, totaling 12 hits, with eight players recording at least one hit. Their bats really came alive in an explosive 3rd inning, the Hawks scored 7 runs behind a huge 2 RBI double from 8th grade third baseman Kameron Smith.

The Hawks, coached by Will Ward, look to stay hot over the weekend with a big matchup against the Morgan County Cougars who are also undefeated to start the season.

KEY PLAYERS

East Ridge – Center Fielder Carter Damron made some nice plays in the outfield and has all the right tools to lead the Warriors to wins this season. He finished the game 1-2 and scored their only run. He also threw 0.1 innings, with 1 strikeout.

Pike Central – Third baseman Kameron Smith will be a player to watch for the coming years, he is only in the 8th grade starting at arguably the toughest position in the infield. He has a ton of pop behind his swing, going 2-4 with 3 RBI. He also has a cannon of an arm and made a couple impressive plays at the hot corner.

KEY STATS

Pike County Central has scored at least 15 runs in all 3 games this season.

UK’s Brooks tapped for top national coaching honor

With a list of achievements nearly too long to mention, University of Kentucky’s Women’s Basketball Coach Kenny Brooks has been named Coach of the Year by The Sporting News.

In less than a year, Brooks has racked up more than 20 wins, including 10 SEC victories, led the way in breaking nine school records, and earned five AP Top 25 wins.

And this not to mention his administrative success.

In the same stretch of time, Brooks signed 11 new players, hired a matching 11 new coaches and staffers, and produced two @hoophall finalists for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

And, still, there’s more.

Gaining in popularity due to Brooks and company’s many achievements, the women’s program also sold out reserved season tickets and had four games that were entirely sold out.

The teams next challenge will come with Liberty University on Friday at noon at Historic Coliseum in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
